In the event of a power outage or if some other problem prevents the gate from opening, tenants have been known to climb over fences and gates to get off the property. Some have injured themselves and filed lawsuits against the facility owners. Many mini-storage locations have installed pedestrian gates which are self-closing and latching. They require a key to enter but allow a pedestrian to walk off the property. It can also be a convenient way for management to enter and exit the property.
